Ecstasy Television Commercial

One of four of the National Drug Campaign television commercials. Pretty scary stuff. The adds are aimed at the nations youth and use fairly extreme fear appeals to reduce peoples motivation to use drugs. I think the campaign tactics may be more successfull as a preventative tool rather than a persuasive tool to stop those who already take drugs. Most people who have already taken drugs might experience A) Optimistic bias and think the chances of that happening to them are pretty low and justify their actions or B) Use defence mechanisms to help them deal with the anxiety causing content and either ignore the add or discredit its value.

I think that your comments on the ad are exactly right! The campaign I think may have a good impact on those who have not engaged in such behaviours as they are very graphic and quiet scary however those who take drugs or (engage in smoking, like Michelle discussed on her blog) are very likely to take the approach that "it wouldn't happen to me' and perhaps view the ad as exaggerated. This being said perhaps those who are yet to be involved in such a way are those who need to get some shocking information where as those involved in drug taking etc need to stop there behaviour on their own merits
Good Post
Thanks beck

Hi Christina,

I agree with beck1411 in your analysis of the ad!

Someone else has posted on the ice version of this ad, which uses the same moderate fear "formula" (forgotten where/who). This is similar to the speeding/drink driving commercials. My gut feeling is that the speeding/drink driving one's were a bit more effective, but I'm not sure why.

Hey everyone,

Yeah I agree, those sort of adds are great scare tactic to prevent young kids experimenting. Pity it didn't get through to joey johns!
